Mastering Diatonic Shifting: A Framework for Improvisers
Included in this Video Course are step-by-step exercises designed to help you internalize and creatively apply the concept of Diatonic Shifting over jazz standards—an essential tool for adding motion, depth, and sophisticated logic to your solos.
We start with going over a classic jazz standard: ‘Just Friends’. Then we dive into 4 of my favorite patterns, practiced full range from the root, that serve as the building blocks for more advanced melodic ideas. From there, we introduce the concept of Diatonic Shifting, a technique that involves moving these patterns through the diatonic scale to create fresh, flowing lines that outline the harmony while maintaining melodic continuity.
Once you’re comfortable with the technique, we explore how to incorporate these shifted patterns into real-time improvisation—so that they become a natural part of your vocabulary rather than a mechanical exercise.
To ensure you’re ready for any key or chord progression, the course includes two ii–V–I lines fully written out and demonstrated in all 12 keys. These lines synthesize everything covered and provide real-world application that you can immediately use in your playing.
If you’ve ever found yourself running out of ideas or sounding too scalar in your solos, this course will open the door to a new world of melodic and harmonic flexibility. Every concept is clearly explained, demonstrated, and transposed to fit your instrument, HOWEVER, the goal with any improvisatory concept is to be able to play the material from your knowledge of it’s framework.
Take your improvisation to the next level—start shifting your lines diatonically and unlock a richer melodic vocabulary today!
